CAGE Screening Instrument • You may be at risk for alcohol-related problems if alcohol consumption: • For adult males less than 65 years old: • 14 or more drinks per week, or • 5 or more drinks during any given day • For all adult females and males 65 years or older: • 7 or more drinks per week, or • 4 or more drinks during any given day • Or: • 1 or more CAGE questions (referring to the past year) were positive. CAGE Screening Instrument • If CAGE indicates a possible problem, it should be followed up with a thorough assessment for Risky Drinking, Alcohol Abuse, or Alcohol Dependence. • CAGE should not be used as the sole criteria for diagnosis since it’s only a screening device.
