  2. Sea & Sage Audubon Society • Riparian View, Irvine 949-261-7963. Continue on Riparian View, past the Irvine Ranch Water District & keep going until you see the sign for the Audubon Society. • After you’ve toured that area, go back and check out the trail provided by the Irvine Ranch Water District at the corner of Riparian View & Michelson.

  3. Turtle Rock Nature Center • 1 Sunnyhill, Irvine 854-8151. • Hours are Mon-Sat 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, noon to 4:00 p.m. Go to the website: www.irvineopenspace.org and click on ‘Programs & Activities’ to find out what’s going on. Or, check the Community Services bulletin that comes out quarterly and is available throughout Irvine at community parks & the Civic Center.

  4. UCI Arboretum • Take a leisurely stroll through the arboretum, located at the Southeast corner of Jamboree & Campus. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 824-5833 for information about events.

  5. Orange County Libraries • Give your child the gift of a Library Card, and show them the wonders waiting inside the Library! Visit the 2 in Irvine: One in University Park, near the intersections of Michelson & Sandburg, on Lexicon. One on the corner of Walnut & Yale. And while you’re there, check out the Friends of the Library stores…the site of many a bargain! Investigate other libraries in surrounding communities: Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Tustin, etc.

  6. Take the Train! • Leave from the Irvine Transportation Center on Barranca. Destination? • A day on the beach in San Clemente. • Enjoy San Juan Capistrano. • Up to Los Angeles to historic Olvera Street! • Check at the station for special deals.

  7. Environmental Nature Center • 1601 16th St., Newport Beach. 645-8489 The ENC has 14 native California plant communities ranging from the desert to Redwood Forest. The ENC welcomes members of the community and the general public. • Hours:Open to the public weekdays 8 - 4p.m., & Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No Admission Charge

  8. Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve • 600 Shellmaker Rd. Newport Beach. (949) 640-6746. www.info@newportbay.org A family bicycle ride along the Back Bay is a great way to spend a weekend morning. Make the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort your destination & have lunch at the Back Bay Café.

  9. Tide pools in Corona del Mar • Crystal Cove State Beach. PCH & Newport Coast Dr. Costs $10.00 to park. There’s a steep incline down to the beach. When there, look for beach glass. Make a shell necklace. Have a picnic, walk the beach at sunset, look for dolphins!

  10. Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort • The ‘Ritz’ of RV parks. • (949) 729-3863. During the summer, the Dunes puts on Movies on the Beach on Friday & Saturday evenings. Call for specifics.

  11. Roger’s Gardens • Corners of MacArthur/San Miguel/San Joaquin Hills Rds. in Newport Beach. • Nice place for a stroll…& perhaps to pick up some plants to put in your backyard. Nice exhibits during fall/winter Holidays.

  12. Sherman Gardens • A great place to visit. Located in Corona del Mar on PCH, south of MacArthur, on the right, it’s one of the gems in the ‘Corona’ of this community.

  15. Santa Ana Zoo • Located at 1801 East Chestnut Ave. Santa Ana, 92701. • Take the Zoofari Express through the zoo on weekends. And don’t forget about the Elephant ride! • Memorial Day - Labor Day: Monday - Friday: 10:00am - 4:00pm. Grounds close at 5:00pm. Saturday - Sunday: 10:00am - 5:00pm.   16. Children under 3 are free. Children 3 – 12 are $3.00. Adults are $6.00. • Directions: Located off the 5 Fwy at First Street. If you’re are traveling North on the 5 Freeway, exit at 1st St. and follow it around (and don't turn anywhere) until you see the zoo parking lot. Only turn when turning into the zoo parking lot. If traveling South on the 5 Fwy, exit at 4th St. Go straight until you see the zoo parking lot and turn left into it.   18. Fullerton Arboretum Fullerton Arboretum is located at 1900 Associated Rd at Yorba Linda Blvd in Fullerton. Exit the Orange (57) Freeway at Yorba Linda Blvd going west. Turn left at Associated Rd and continue to the end. Turn left into the Arboretum parking lot.   20. Orange County Farmers’ Markets • There are roughly 400 certified Farmers Markets in California, 150 in the southland. The Wednesday Santa Monica market is one of the largest & most successful in the nation. It’s on Arizona Ave. between 2nd & 3rd Sts. & runs from 8:30 to 1:30. • Children can learn so much about food by talking with the people who actually grow it.

  21. SATURDAYS • Irvine: University Center across from UCI on Campus (in the In-&-Out parking lot), 8 to 12. • Corona del Mar: PCH at Marguerite, every Saturday from 9 to 1. • Laguna Beach: Lumberyard lot, Forest & Ocean Avenues. Every Saturday Sept through June, 8 to noon. July & August, 8 to 11.

  23. Railroad Museum Foundation • 2137 250th Street, Lomita. • (310) 326-6255 : www.lomita-rr.org • 405 North to the 110 South. Exit @ Sepulveda Blvd, right at the exit. Take Sepulveda to Vermont Ave. & make a left. Make a right onto Lomita Blvd., a left onto Eshelman Ave. & a right onto 250th Street.   24. Old Town Tustin • Has borders that delineate the area between the 5 freeway and East First Street, and South B Street and just past Prospect Avenue. • Look in the Irvine World News for information on upcoming events.

  25. The Circle in Orange • At the intersections of Chapman & Glassell streets in Orange and filled with all kinds of stores & restaurants. It’s fun to take children to look at antiques & use the opportunity to teach them about the way things used to be. It also gives you a chance to teach them about respect for items in a store & how to look with your eyes, and not your hands. Storeowners also appreciate seeing parents teach this to their children.
