  1. The AP Essay Question 2

  2. The AP Language Test consists of two segments: one hour of multiple-choice questions and two hours to write three essays. • The first will be a synthesis essay. • The second will be an essay to analyze a nonfiction text. • The third will be a persuasive essay.

  3. The Second AP Essay • You will be given a passage to read and analyze. • The most important aspect of this essay is that you are careful to answer exactly what the question requires. • You will be asked to respond to the passage by writing a relatively brief essay that describes how the style, the organization, and/or the rhetoric of the passage help the author to achieve a purpose. • Sometime you will be given two short passages to analyze and compare.

  4. The question may suggest that you consider such elements as tone, diction, and selection of detail but these are only meant as suggestions. • You may choose to use those elements that you notice to be significant. • Sometimes the questions will direct you to write about specific elements of language. • Then you must deal with figures of speech, syntax, or whatever the instructions say.

  5. If the question asks you to analyze the use • of language, this may include • choice of words (diction) • word order (syntax) • figures of speech • sentence structure • rhythm, sound, tone • or any other characteristics of style and rhetoric you choose.

  6. If the question asks you to analyze structure, you should observe: • what the author discusses 1st, 2nd, 3rd • the reason the author may have chosen the order • how the organization helps to achieve the purpose

  7. No matter how many aspects or how many texts you are asked to analyze, the essay itself should be unified around the author’s purpose.

  8. SCORING • Essays are scored by two readers -scale from 0 to 9. • An essay that receives a 9: • Shows exceptional control of writing techniques • Contains discussion that is clear, interesting, and correct • Analyzes rhetorical and stylistic devices with precision • Refers frequently to the text, directly or indirectly • Succinctly describe how such matters as tone, irony, diction, and use of examples contribute to the structure and meaning of the passage • Contain only inconsequential errors

  9. The main issues that would lower the score on this essay are: • inadequate response to the question. • missing the point of the question • analyzing only secondary stylistic or rhetorical strategies. • discussing only superficial ideas or contain concepts that are developed incoherently.

  10. A second major deficit occurs when the answer lacks full development. The ideas may be presented clearly but are unsupported with specific detail or reference to the text.
