  2. To comment on the Working Draft Land Use Map, Terms and Policy Recommendations from the perspective of the Protected Areas Strategy (PAS), GNWT. Specific questions related to the PAS goals and principles for the Committee to consider. Purpose of This Presentation

  3. The PAS is a community-led process for permanently protecting special areas through existing legislation. Aboriginal organizations, environmental organizations, the Federal and Territorial governments, and industry are partners in the PAS.   4. Goal 1: To protect special natural and cultural areas. Goal 2: To protect core representative areas in each eco-region. Was eco-region representation considered when identifying Conservation Zones? The PAS Has Two Goals

  5. The PAS is guided by 16 principles for the protection of areas. Not all are relevant to the work of the DCLUPC. Questions relate to: Land Use Planning Ecological Integrity Resource Assessment PAS Principles

  6. PAS PRINCIPLE: The PAS recognizes that locally based land use planning and resource management processes will take the lead on identifying community and regional interests in areas being considered for protection. Consider an appendix describing the PAS and its relationship to the land use planning process. Ensure the draft uses up-to-date PAS terminology and descriptions of the areas being considered.   7. PAS PRINCIPLE: Protected areas are planned and managed to maintain biodiversity and ecological processes, which may include buffer zones and connecting corridors. How were decisions made about connecting corridors? Was the concept of buffering considered? How will access to special management zones and general use zones be managed? Ecological Integrity

  8. PAS PRINCPLE: In the PAS, each Candidate Protected Area is studied in detail for its renewable and non-renewable resource potential. Were renewable energy sources considered? How were “low”, “medium”, “high”, and “very high” defined? Resource Assessments

  9. Congratulations on reaching this important milestone in the land use planning process! We are happy to answer your questions about our comments or about the PAS during the Regional Forum and afterwards. The PAS Secretariat and all of the PAS partners are looking forward to working with Dehcho communities and organizations in the future for the permanent protection of special areas. In Conclusion
