Present state SDC Water in Africa • Water is not core element of strategies of COOFs- water is not prioritized in country strategies- but water included e.g. in agriculture, rural development or health • Relevant portfolio of GPWI projects in Africa- some GPWI projects in SDC Focus Countries and beyond- potential for up-scaling of approaches • NGO Consortium has strong focus on Africa- phase 2 with projects in number of East and West African countries- access to WASH and water for small scale familiy agric. - has it’s own network activities • Africa underrepresented in ResEau- only few members from Africa

Why establish a sub-ResEAU Africa • Networking- Knowing each other among SDC staff involved in Water projects in Africa and knowing how is doing what- Knowing the main implementing partners of SDC water projects in Africa • Information exchange- sharing of lessons learnt in projects (e.g. through exchange of end of phase reports of water projects)- quick electronic access to important sector reports concerning Africa- update on outcomes of relevant sector events in Africa • Learning events- organisation of one workshop per year on a mutually agreed topic- exchange visits

Proposed set-up • Workshops of NGO Consortium as NucleusNGO Consortium will organize each year one regional workshop in West Africa and one in East Africa as part of its own networking agenda.SDC resource persons from COOFs in Africa will be invited to these workshops and contribute actively. start with participation in regional workshops, then organize Africa wide workshop • Africa component on sharewebDocument repository entailing:- relevant African water sector documets- fact sheets of SDC water projects and responsible persons- Quick links to partner organizations and networks

  5. Suggested workshop topics • Demand and opportunity driven topic selection- not decided yet, NGO Consortium quite flexible- consultation within NGO Consortium and SDC • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)- Blue Schools- Sanitation as a business- Water Supply and Sanitation in rural areas and small towns • Agricultural Water Productivity and Efficiency- links to food security and rural development projects- modern technologies: drip, sprinkler, deficit irrigation, ICT (iMoMo) - Multiple-Use-Systems (MUS)- enabling environment: role of micro-finance institutions
