DOWEX 21K XLT Anion Exchange Resin By: Juan Gonzalez MEEN 3344
What Is It • It is a Type I Strong Base Resin • Contains quaternary methylamines producing functionalities which give it the ability to exchange anions. • When in the OH ionic form, this class of resin acts like a very strong insoluble base in solution • Water 55 – 65 % • Styrene 35 – 45 % • Divinylbenzene Copolymer • Ethylstyrene Copolymer • Chloromethyl Trimethylamine functionalized in the chloride form
Physical & Chemical Properties • Physical State: Solid Beads • Color: White to Yellow • Odor: Amine • Specific Gravity: 1.06 – 1.10 • Solubility in Water: insoluble in water • pH: essentially neutral • Particle Size: 0.3 – 1.2 mm
What Its Used For • This specific type of resin is used in uranium recovery. • Other types of resins are used for other types of metals depending on the nature of reaction. • Uranium comes from the well field, enters anion exchange columns where it is mixed with the resin and is cleaned from the mud and sulfuric acids. • Resin regeneration is completed through elution.
