Campus networks are changing • On Campus • Wireless has already overtaken wired at some campuses! • Number of base stations • Mean 156 • Max 900 • Min 16 • Laptop penetration up to 80% • Nationally – Comreg Q3 2008 • Mobile Broadband: 268,705 (+203%) • Total: 1,125,080 • Globally • 4 Billion Mobile phones Globally (SIMs) – ITU Dec 17th 2008.How many have WiFi and or 3G? • Sensor deployments just beginning ~10 Billion sensor devices by 2020 Sources WINLAB, Telegeography 2007, Mike Norris, Comreg & Fred Clarke UCD
What access network will your users use to connect to your network in 2010? • Access technologies • Campus Fixed network • Campus WiFi • 3G • WiMAX • LTE(4G) • Combination of all of the above? • Other technologies?
Possible outcomes.. • Have WiFi/WiMAX on Campus • Negotiate 3G/LTE service and remove WiFi/WiMAX • Provide WiFi over 3G services (TNC2009) • Build, wholesale or negotiate a WiMAX service • Combination of all of the above? • Other standards IEEE 802.22 (Cognitive radio in TV Broadcast spectrum) /IEEE 802.20 (Mobile)
HEAnet Wireless Strategy • Phase 1 (2008-2011) • National Mobile Broadband Service • Continued rollout of eduroam • Implement existing middleware strategy to support mobility • Licensing and the communications regulator • Trials of new wireless broadband technology (WiMAX/LTE) • Governance and Review • Phase 2 (2010) • On Campus and extended campus deployment
Market review & Trial • In early 2008 UCD carried out a 100 user trial with Vodafone • HEAnet carried out a survey of our University and Clients to obtain a level of interest and wiliness to promote. • Results from the user trial and feedback from clients was used as input to the tender.
Key points ofNational Mobile Broadband Service • O2 and HEAnet are offering exclusive broadband package to third level students & staff of HEAnet institutions since Sept. 2008. • New offer available from 1st September 2009 – 31st August 2010 • Customers must prove that they are a student or staff member from one of the HEAnet institutions in order to avail of this offer. • Customers that signed up for HEAnet Broadband last year can migrate to the new price plans, but only when their original contract is completed.
Some usage numbers • 94% takes up 12 month contract • 6% of subscribers withdrew from service (churn); is low compared to other subscribers. • At end August 2009: 6,300 subscribers expected to double • Average download 1.8 GByte/month (general public 2.3 GByte/month)
Next steps • Review National Mobile Broadband Service • Framework contracts? • Federation - Identity management and Mobility • Stimulate roaming offerings pan-European • DCU User trials of WiMAX technology in 2009 • Possible trial of LTE technology 2010 • Digital dividend due to freeing up of analogue TV Broadcast channels • Anything else we should be investigating?
