The Plurality of Forms and the unity of the single form Fr. Miguel Noyola Dr. Philippe Yates STP 618: British Franciscans… Final project
On the assertion of those who held the “unity” of the substantial form contrasted with those who undertook the “plurality” of the substantial forms. INTRODUCTORY notes on the topic as referred the single substantial form and the plurality of forms
The two inseparable principles The form and matter do not exist independently of each other. The matter and form are principles by which material beings exist, one is passive and the other is an active principle.
The erroneous approach. Many have erred concerning forms because: they considered them in the way substancesare to be considered. Existencedoes not belong to the “form” but to the compositesubject through the 'form', so that becoming (fieri), which terminates in being, is not a process of movement of the form but of the complete subject.
Another misunderstanding approach • The form is not a being but the principle of being: • The form 'acts' upon the matter as an agent or movingcause.
Modification of the Hylomorphic theory • Again we remind ourselves that the matter and the form are principles and not beings parse as to consider them individually. • Tolerance of the Platonic opinion when taking the soul as mover/motor rather than the form: because is quite “impossible” for several essentially different souls to be in 'one' body.
The realistic input: Contrasting the Platonic view that the “soul” aims to be the form rather than just the body’s motor mover.
As regards the theory of the plurality of forms • Three suggestions on the approach: • What entails the theory of the plurality of forms: • The empirical evidence • Thomas Aquinas
