To be a teacher is to be a prophet . . . Our job is to prepare a child for a world about which we do not know.
IDEA 97 • No Child Left Behind • AZ LEARNS • BOLD! GAME
TUSD BOLD! GAME By June 2005, TUSD is the premier school district in the nation. The Leadership Team (LT) holds itself accountable so that: • Every student exceeds all expected performance standards. • Every student graduates and is able to compete and succeed in a global society. • No student is left behind.
BOLD! GAME MEASURES • Students exceed expected AIMS standards. • 100% of students graduate. • 100% attendance for students. • 0% student retention. • 0% suspensions/expulsions. • 0% dropout rate. • SAT/ACT scores exceed national average
Access to education is not good enough – Achievement matters – for every student
Sticking to It! Focus x Competence x Passion Equals the Adherence To Meet the Goal
Focus Student Achievement • Services to students • Supports to schools and teachers • Communication with principals • Communication with parents
Competence Ongoing Professional Development in evidence based practices designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities
Passion “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Focus on Achievement • Arizona State Standards/ CORE Curriculum • Needs of the student identified on the IEP • Transition Needs
Intervention, Intervention, Intervention! • Use data to identify and develop successful strategies • Use effective strategies with integrity • Modify the environment • Accommodate • Identify “can’t do” vs. “won’t do”
The solution is where the child is
Competence Effective Instructionfor Every Student
Passion A teacher is. . .. • A good watcher, listener, thinker, problem-solver for students and parents • An advocate for students and parents • A seeker of information
We are in the age of accountability for all students………. but our job as special educators is to not lose sight of the individual diversity of the students we support to enhance strengths of the students to mediate their needs to develop the world so that students with disabilities are embraced and valued for the wonderful gifts and contributions they provide to our lives
