  2. How does PERSONALITY influence emotional expression? • Extroverted people have a greater ability to communicate openly. • Because they are more involved with several people at a time. • Introverted people tend to be more withdrawn when it comes to communicating • They tend to be more shy.

How does CULTURE influence emotional expression? • Some cultures value more calm personalities and expressions • Chinese value a “low arousal positive affect” (calm) • Some cultures value more exciting and outspoken personalities and expressions. • Europeans value a “high arousal positive affect” (excitement)

  4. How does GENDER influence emotional expression? • Guys tend to try and keep a “tough guy” appearance and try not to express weaknesses. • Girls are more open with sharing their feelings and emotions.

  5. How do SOCIAL CONVENTIONS influence emotional expression? • Too much expression of positive feelings is discouraged. • Shaped by requirements of social roles.

  6. How does FEAR OF DISCLOSURE influence emotional expression? • Fear of actually opening up and being honest about how they feel. • Example: It might be frightening to say “I’m sorry. I was wrong.”

  7. How does EMOTIONAL CONTAGIONinfluence emotional expression? • our emotions are influenced by the feelings of those around us. • We tend to catch emotions like it’s a virus
