    3. 1. Self – defence (defend your country when attacked) 2. Racial or ethnic hatred 3. Fighting against injustice and aggression 4. Natural resources such as water, oil, land etc.

    4. Explain what the United Nations do and three ways that they try to achieve their aims

    5. An international organisation that tries to prevent wars by finding solutions to disputes. They try to achieve these by: 1. Negotiating treatise between countries to reduce the number and type of weapons 2. Organising peace talks 3. Trade restrictions (restricting the sale of certain goods to aggressive countries)

    6. Name two religious organisations that campaign for peace and explain how they do this

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is a Christian organisation Islamic Relief and the Muslim Peace Fellowship is an Islamic organisation These organisations campaign in a non-violent way for world peace by: Educating both sides Encouraging reconciliation Teaching forgiveness Encouraging non-violent protests Campaigning against oppressive governments

    8. What is a ‘Just war’?

    9. A ‘Just war’ is a set of conditions that must be met before a war can be said to be for the ‘right reasons. For example, It is fought with the aim of bringing peace, the methods used are fair and reasonable etc.

    10. What is pacifism?

    11. Pacifism means refusing to fight in wars. There are three types of Pacifism: Absolute Pacifism (no fighting at all) Relative Pacifism (no fighting in certain circumstances) Nuclear Pacifism (no use of nuclear weapons)

    12. Should a Christian follow the peace teachings of Jesus at all times? Or is it sometimes justified for a Christian to go to war?

For Jesus taught that people should obey the lawful government St Paul told people tat Christians have a duty to obey those in authority Jesus told his disciples ‘if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one’. This means that sometimes violence might be necessary In some situations, war may be the lesser of two evils Against The 10 commandments forbid killing Jesus taught that people should love their enemies Jesus stopped his own followers from using violence Nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction can cause terrible suffering to innocent people

For In certain circumstances the use of violence is permitted but it must be fought for a just cause, it must be a last resort and innocent civilians must not be attacked The Qur’an teaches that muslims must fight if they are attcked Mohammed himself fought in wars The Qur’an teaches that anyone who dies in a just war will go straight to Heaven Against The Qur’an teaches peace and reconciliation Modern weapons are not compatible with the Muslim rules about war – they kill too many innocent people Non violent methods are the only way to achieve peace in the end – people should persevere War increases hatred and violence leads to more violence

Christian: Bullying involves verbal or physical violence and is against Christian Teaching God created each individual in God’s image therefore bullying is mistreating God’s creation Goes against the Golden Rule Everyone will be judged after death by God Jesus taught respect Muslim Islam teaches that any kind of violence without just cause is wrong Individuals have been created by Allah and it is wrong to abuse his creation Muslims should work to put an end to injustice and cruelty On the last day, all Muslims will be judged by God Mohammed taught that people should protect the weak

    21. Forgiveness means stopping blaming someone and pardoning them for what they have done Reconciliation means bringing people together who were opposed to each other

Christian: The Bible teaches forgiveness and reconciliation Jesus died on the cross and forgave his enemies With the love of God everything is forgiveable Some might argue, If the conflict was about a religious or moral issue that the Bible had a definite teaching and the person they are in conflict with is going against Christian beliefs, there can be no reconciliation as Christian beliefs cannot be given up. Muslim The Qur’an teaches that conflicts should be resolved by forgiveness and reconciliation Allah forgives people and therefore Muslims should do the same On the day of judgement, God will show mercy and forgiveness to those who have shown that to others Prophet Mohammed taught that people should forgive and be reconciled with those that have offended them Some Muslims would say that certain actions are unforgivable such as working against Muslim principles
