Major Concepts • What are the major parts of the male and female reproductive systems? • What are the stages of human development? • How does a fetus grow inside the womb?
Male Reproductive System • Main Structures: • Testes- Makes Sperm and Testosterone. It is covered by the SCROTUM, or sac that maintains temperature for sperm production. • Epididymis- Stores Sperm • Vas Deferens- tube leading to abdomen • Urethra- passage way for urine • Penis-protects utrethra • All Three deliver sperm
Structure of Sperm *Fluids are added by gland to the sperm. This fluid is important because sperm needs it for swimming and nutrients. The mixture of sperm and this fluid is called SEMEN.
Female Reproductive System • Main Structures: • Ovaries- Make egg cells and releases estrogen and progesterone • Fallopian Tubes/Oviduct- Transport egg cells. *Contains hair like projections called CILIA. These help the egg move along. SITE OF FERTILIZATION • Uterus- Holds developing baby • Vagina- To outside of body a.k.a. Birthing canal.
Fertilization • The process of a sperm joining an egg is called fertilization. • The fertilized egg is now called a zygote.
Development of a Human SPERM EGG ZYGOTE EMBRYO (Ball of cells) FETUS (Organs appear) NEWBORN
Differentiation • Definition: The process by which new cells in a zygote specialize and become different from one another. How are these pictures differentiate below? • Happens at the embryo stage of development
Embryo Stage What parts of the embryo are starting to develop?
Fetal Stage What is more developed here? What is unique about the fetal position?
Fetal Growth • Nutrients are carried from the mother, through the placenta and down the umbilical cord to the fetus. • Fetal wastes are carried the opposite way, back into the mother’s bloodstream.
TRANSPORT TO THE BABY via the placenta. • THINGS BROUGHT INTO THE BABY (usually good things) • Oxygen • Nutrients • Water • Not so good (alcohol, drugs, nicotine, viruses, bacteria) THINGS REMOVED FROM THE BABY (usually bad things) • Carbon Dioxide • Wastes • Water
