Work starts in the field. Here Botanists from the Herbarium are collecting samples from the cloud forests of the Santa Lucia reserve
The pigeon hole labelled pinacea contains specimens of all the pine trees found in Ecuador. Within the main collection there are approximately 20 aisles, 30foot long, floor to ceiling of samples. I couldn’t get a picture to do it justice.
Inside the greenhouse, some plants which are threatened with local or global extinction due to deforestation are preserved.
The National Herbarium of Ecuadorhas the monumental task of discovering, collecting and cataloguing the plant species of Ecuador. The work of the Herbarium means that the diversity of plant life can be truly appreciated.
