Objectives • Understand what the expectations for college level writing are • Identify the areas in which you need to improve your own writing in order to meet the expectations of college level writing • Make sure you’re part of the 6%!
College Writing Expectations • Read through the list of expectations. • Underline or highlight the main expectations professors have for student writing. • Discuss: • How did we do on the brainstorming? • Were we close? • What did we get right? • What were we missing?
Evaluate Your Own Essay • Look over your own essay. • What expectations on the list or on the board did you meet? • What expectations didn’t you meet? • Discuss: • Share your areas of concern in your writing. • What areas of concern do you have in common? Microsoft, 2011
Sample College Essay • Emily Troeger was a student at Century College, a community college in Minnesota • She was assigned to write a persuasive essay and incorporate outside sources.
Small Group Discussion • Form groups of 3-4 students. • Read through Emily’s essay on your own and then discuss the following questions: • How well does this writer meet expectations? • Which expectations does she meet? • Which expectations doesn’t she meet? • What differences do you see between your writing and hers? • What do you still need to learn to compose an essay that meets college writing expectations?
Essay Evaluation Form • University of Minnesota Writing Center Essay Evaluation from Tim Gustafson, University of Minnesota Writing Center • These criteria are used by the U of M director of the freshman writing program to score student writing.
Evaluate Your Own Essay • Look at your own essay and apply the evaluation criteria. • You can write on the form. • Identify whether or not you fulfill criteria and what you need to work on in order to prepare for college writing.
