  4. Independent • Independent Clauses could stand by themselves as discrete sentences, except that when they do stand by themselves, separated from other clauses, they're normally referred to simply as sentences, not clauses.

  5. Examples • Bob didn't mean to do it, but he did it anyway. • Ramonita thought about joining the church choir, but she never talked to her friends about it. • The doctor told Charlie to lose weight and exercise vigorously for forty-five minutes a day. • Charlie has a hard time sticking to a diet; he really loves rich, sweet desserts.

  6. Dependent • Dependent Clauses cannot stand by themselves and make good sense. • They must be combined with an independent clause so that they become part of a sentence that can stand by itself. • They act either in the capacity of some kind of noun or as some kind of modifier. • Remember that a dependent clause always contains a subject and a verb, but it cannot stand by itself.

  7. Which is Which? • Although Ramonita often thought about joining the choir, she never talked to her friends about it. • Ramonita never talked to her friends about joining the choir, because she was afraid they would make fun of her. • Yasmin is Ramonita's sister. Yasmin told Ramonita to join the choir no matter what her friends said.

  13. The Semi-Colon • Used to break up complex lists. • Used to link two sentences (two independent clauses).

To get ready for her Jersey Shore Finale Party, Ms. Keatings prepared her salty, buttery popcorn called her tanned Italian friends and practiced her vocalization of “T-Shirt Time” and “Oh Yeah.” • I can’t believe England lost the soccer match today furthermore it was their final chance to qualify for the World Cup. • Twice a week, Aziza and Derek go to a nice restaurant for a good meal, a little dessert, and pleasant conversation, Aziza goes Tuesdays, and Derek goes Fridays.

  16. The Comma Splice... • A comma splice occurs when two complete sentences (independent clauses) are joined together with only a comma between them. • (An independent clause is a clause that can stand on its own as a sentence.)

  17. How do we fix it? • Use a semicolon to separate the independent clauses • Add an appropriate linking word between the two clauses (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet) • Make the independent clauses into two separate sentences
