  5. Joseph McCarthy • 1950-needs a re-election campaign • Commies were taking over the Govt!! • Accusation followed accusation-McCarthyism or unfair tactic of accusing people of disloyalty w/o evidence. • Ex- listed having 57,81, 205 names of State Dept. Comrades-never gave one name

  6. Continued • Massive fear and hysteria ensued • Support by Rep. in hopes of Pres. Win • 1954- McCarthy accuses the Army and bullies witnesses on TV, alienates audience • No profession or opinion was safe!

  10. Egypt plays hardball • Nasser and Egypt play U.S. for fools • Attempt to play U.S. and USSR for Aid • After loan falls through, Suez Canal nationalized • Israel, G.B., and Frenchies attack • UN stop the fighting • Eisenhower pulls a Truman • Eisenhower Doctrine swears to protect Mid East

  11. Hungary Revolts • Imre Nagy wants democracy, denounces Warsaw Pact • USSR kill roughly 30,000 Hungarians, execute Nagy • 200,000 Hungarians flee westward • US is idle
