What is Philosophy in the Aegean? • An expedition to ancient sites in Aegean Turkey in conjunction with the course PHIL 490. • Two weeks of classes at Kamloops campus (6 hours a week) will be followed by the Field School in Turkey. • Trips to the ruins are augmented with talks and discussions of the Ancient philosophers and writers that once called these cities home. • Our base for our 2011journey will the town of Selcuk, Turkey, but some of our excursions will require accommodation in other Turkish towns near the sites.

Getting there You are responsible for your own transportation to Izmir Aim to arrive in Izmir, Turkey May 15 Flight from Vancouver to Izmir on Travelocity.com currently priced at $1360 cad(incl. taxes) www.travelocity.ca Driver will bring you from Izmir Airport to Selcuk on May 15 and back on May 27.

  38. CREDIT OPTIONS: FOR CREDIT: If you want to take Phil 490 for credit, you need to pay the standard tuition for a 3 credit course in addition to your trip fee. There will be a slate of 3 hour classes in late March, early April. Grading will be as follows. • 1 paper due May 15 30% • 1 on-site presentation 30% • 1 paper at the end of the field trip 40% FIELD TRIP ONLY OPTION You need only pay the trip fee.

  39. You are responsible for your own transportation to Istanbul and Izmir plus the trip fee. Flights from SeattletoIzmir: $1360 (price on www.travelocity.ca Jan 10, 2011) You will also be responsible for tuition fees if enrolling in the credit course. $400 Trip fees at present (excludes air): TRU Students: $1100 Non TRU Students: $1600 Insurance: BCAA travel insurance costs approx. $20 Trip fee includes: Airport Transfer Accommodation All meals Site fees Bus fees Heraclitus Symposium Dinner Tips and Gratuities SUMMARY OF COSTS (Full package for TRU STUDENT): FLIGHT 1360 TUITION 400 TRIP 1100 INSURANCE 20 PERSONAL 320 Total 3200 Costs

  40. Deadlines You must inform me of your intention to participate and pay a non-refundable deposit at the meeting on FEB 11 at 4:30. Place TBA. Students wishing to participate should buy tickets to Turkey as soon as possible AFTER the FEB 11 MEETING, planning to arrive in Izmir May 15.
