  4. Success of the Minoans was based on trade instead of conquest -crossed into the Middle East and the Nile Valley

  5. The Palace of Knossos Shrines- areas dedicated to the honor of gods and goddesses Frescoes- watercolor paintings done on wet plaster

  6. Life of Women in Minoan Civilization - appeared freely in public and enjoyed more rights than women in other civilizations

  7. “Changing of the Guard” 1400 B.C.- Minoan Civilization had disappeared Knossos destroyed by volcano and tidal wave Invaders known as the Mycenaeans

  8. Mycenae First Greek-speaking people Dominated the Aegean from 1400-1200 B.C. city-states

  9. The Trojan War (1250 B.C.) Present-day Turkey straits- narrow water passages Helen of Troy Trojan Horse Heinrich Schliemann

  10. Dorians- invaded from the North and overtook the Mycenaeans 1100-800 B.C.- Dark Ages of Greece - People forgot many skills, including the art of writing

  11. Homer (ca.750 B.C.)- blind poet who traveled from village to village singing of heroic deeds. - Tales were passed along orally for generations before they were written down

  12. The Iliad -Chief source for the Trojan War - Achilles

  13. The Odyssey - Odysseus and his journey home after the fall of Troy -honor, courage, and eloquence
