  2. Election of 2000 – The Candidates: George W. Bush (R) Al Gore (D) Ralph Nader (G) Republican George W. Bush beat Democratic challenger Al Gore in one of the closest elections in American history.

Al-Qaeda • Means ‘The Base’ • Set up around 1989 • Islamist group • Uses suicide attacks and bombings • Supports jihad(‘holy war’) against enemies of Islam • Believes that all foreign influences should be removed from Muslim countries • Believes in creating a new Muslim caliphate (state with a purely Muslim government) to be run under strict Sharia Law • Wages war against Infidels (non-Muslims) • Directs attacks mainly at the USA and the UK, but also against countries that have moved away from the true ideals of Islam.

War in Afghanistan • After 9/11, US immediately started bomb attacks against the terrorists in Afghanistan and against the Taliban government which was supporting them. • By December 2001, the Taliban had been defeated. • In January 2002, an international peacekeeping force came in (NATO.) • Since then Afghanistan has had a new government elected and re-elected. • But the Taliban has returned and fighting continues...

  15. Invasion of Iraq • Pres. Bush and American government believed the war in Iraq was necessary to prevent Saddam Hussein from using WMD’s against the U.S. or our allies in the future. • We also believed he had ties to al Qaeda, that he supported terrorism, and we wanted to “free the Iraqi people.” • Operation Iraqi Freedom: March,19-May 1, 2003 • Saddam was captured in Dec., 2003 • Nov., 2006: Saddam was convicted of war crimes committed against his own people. • Executed in Dec., 2006 • Following the invasion of Iraq, there has been continued fighting by insurgents against both the US and newly formed Iraqi government.
