Interprofessional Education “Patient Centered Cases An Interprofessional Approach” 135 small groups of 13 health professional students +1 faculty facilitator Diabetes Obesity and Asthma Rheumatoid Arthritis Tuberculosis Cardiovascular/Hypertension Young Adult Pediatric Older Adult (65) plus Adolescent Middle Age Adult • First semester cases focus on team building, communication and other vital interprofessional skills. • Second semester cases emphasize cultural sensitivity, ethical dilemmas and end of life issues.

  11. Curriculum IPE = Interprofessional Education IPPE = Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (4 weeks X3) APPE = Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (6 weeks X6) AE = Advanced Elective (16 weeks)

Block Design of Curriculum • Unique in nature, WesternU first to offer amongst colleges of pharmacy nationwide. • First year modified block • 10 blocks/year (starts in 2ndyear to mid 3rd year) • Each block 18 days in length, 6 h/day • 5th, 10th and 16th block is an integrated block for 15-18 days.

  13. IPPE Clinical Experience • Early introduction to clinical work: • Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) • P-1 (4) weeks in Fall and Spring in a community pharmacy • P-2 (4) weeks in the Summer in a hospital pharmacy

APPE and AE Clinical Experience • Rotations Sites Include: • Private hospitals • County hospitals • Veterans Administration hospitals • Military hospitals • Long-term-care facilities • Rehabilitation hospitals • Compounding pharmacies • Managed care facilities • Psychiatric facilities • Children's hospitals • Chain drug stores • Independently-owned pharmacies. • Specialty Pharmacy • Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience • ~350 sites and ~650 Preceptors • Spring of 3rd year and Fall of 4th year • (6) 6 week rotations • 4th year 16 week Advanced Elective

Licensure • California requirements: 1,500 intern hours prior to graduation (900 by self; 600 through the pharmacy curriculum) • Internship hours calculated starting P-1 year • Licensure examinations NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination) & CPJE(California Pharmacist Jurisprudence Exam)

Prerequisite Coursework • All prerequisites must be completed at a regionally accredited U.S. institution(exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis) • Advanced Placement (AP) credit is accepted for all prerequisite courses. AP credit must be reported by subject and credits, and come directly from your institution or testing service • Prerequisite courses and AP credit scores must be completed no more than ten years prior to planned date of matriculation. • All prerequisites must be completed with a grade of “C” or better • All prerequisites must be completed by the end of the springterm prior to matriculation • Courses may not be taken on a pass/fail • All coursework taken from non-US institutions must be submitted to an approved service for evaluation

Admissions Requirements • In addition to course requirements: • Minimum Overall and Science GPA is 2.75 • Average competitive overall GPA is 3.36 • Average competitive science GPA is 3.29 • 3 letters of reference (professors, academic advisors, employers, pharmacists) • Personal questionnaire • Transcripts

Admissions Process • Interviews • By invitation, based on file evaluation score • Interviews - multiple interviewers (a faculty member and a current student/alumni/preceptor) • Emphasis is on communication and interpersonal skills • Writing sample • Status letters sent out by March • accepted, alternate list, not accepted

What are we looking for? • Excellent communication skills • Compassionate(able to relate to others, good interpersonal skills, empathetic) • Dedicated(motivated to pharmacy; show by work or volunteer experience) • Dependable(give examples in your personal statement/questionnaire that you ‘got the job done’, and that you are responsible) • Display good judgment
