  2. What is Culture? • Culture: is the Language, Beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and material objects that are passed from one generation to the next

  3. Material Culture • Material Culture: The tangible objects that distinguish a group of people • Examples • Weapons • Hair styles • Clothing • Jewelry

  4. Nonmaterial Culture • Nonmaterial Culture: a groups way of thinking • Examples • Beliefs • Values • Language • Music

  5. Cultural Relativism • Not judging a culture by your standards, but understanding a culture on your own terms.

  6. Symbolic Culture (nonmaterial) • Gestures: are body movements that communicate to other people

  7. Language • Language: a system of symbols that can be combined in an infinite number of way to represent objects and thought

  8. Values • Values: The standards by which people define desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or not

  9. Norms • Norms: rules of behavior • Sanctions: are approval or disapproval when violating or upholding norms. • Folkways: norms that are not strictly enforced • Mores: norms that are strictly enforced (essential core values) • Taboo: a norm so strong that it brings revulsion if violated
