  2. You are a regular reader of a leading broadsheet. You have been following the news on a particular current issue, which you believe is important.

  3. Because you want other readers to recognize its importance, you decide to write a letter to the editor regarding the issue.

  4. In your 250- to 300-word letter, you make a claim that the issue is important and should be addressed. To support your claim, you provide at least three reasons.

  5. Because you want the other readers to understand the issue, you use clear, simple language.

  6. Discussion of a News Item

  7. Contents • Two- to three-sentence summary of the news item • “This news is important because…”(5 to 7 sentences explaining the significance of the issue)

  8. Two-Sentence Summary A Hong Kong court ruled that foreign domestic helpers may apply for residency rights. Despite this, the Hong Kong government said it would not approve their applications for right of abode.

  9. Significance of News This news is important because it could have implications not only on the status of Filipino domestic workers already working in Hong Kong, but also on those who intend to apply for the same type of work in the future.

  10. As of December 2010, around 100,000 of the 285,681 foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong are Filipinos.

  11. Applications for residency may be availed of only by those who work in Hong Kong for at least seven years continuously.

  12. Because of this, workers’ groups fear that if the ruling is affirmed by higher courts, the Hong Kong government would only give domestic workers three two-year employment contracts to limit their stay to six years…
