Program Organization Staff Responsibilities • Make player safety the highest priority. • Provide a strength and conditioning program to get players physically prepared to reduce the chance of injury. • Demand performance from coaches and players. Accountability!! • Model integrity, desire, pride and sportsmanship for our players. • Demand integrity, desire, pride, work ethic and sportsmanship from our players – Never let these foundations be compromised. • Allow players to understand that they are part of something bigger than themselves and that shared successes are life long. Lao Tzu. • Establish a respectful working relationship by treating athletes with dignity and respect. • Build character through positive coaching, enthusiastic encouragement and meetings/discussions that focus on character

  7. Program Schedule Schedule • A preseason and in season schedule of practices, games and events is provided in electronic form and can be given in hard copy if requested. • Provided so players and parents can plan accordingly – see parent handbook or power point • Players are expected to attend all practices, workouts, and team functions- honor your teammates and yourself. • All players must inform the coaching staff of any conflicts

  8. Physicals/Medical Physical Certification/Medical • Players must be certified by a physician as physically fit to participate in football. • Players must provide a current physician’s certification before practice. If you don’t then you must purchase the district’s insurance (pamphlet available). • Coaches will be diligent about player safety. 9. Player Safety DSHS Football /AD Office have taken the following steps in player safety prevention and management: • 1) Coaches certified on signs/symptoms and protocol for concussions, heart conditions, heat, hydration,CPR/First Aid • 2) Hired a full time trainer for therapy, practices and games. • 3) We have purchased Riddell helmets with Gen. 2 Impact Technology Sensing. 10. Strength and Conditioning Overview • DHS football competes at the highest level in the Sac-Joaquin Section • Stronger, well-conditioned players are safer and more likely to avoid injury • The S&C program • Players expected to attend all 4 cycles of the strength and conditioning year. Pre-season (June, July) sessions focusing on rapid gains. In season (Aug-Nov) focusing on strength and conditioning maintenance. Immediate post season (Nov-Dec) focusing on rest, recovery and building up. Off season(Jan-May) HUGE gains period • Support from every parent is needed to ensure the required commitment level to compete in the DVC safely. 2019 Varsity players are expected to be here at 6:40 am and after school for spring ball (M,T,Th,F- 5/13-5/31)JV/ expected 5:30-7:15 pm ( M/T/Th-5/13-5/30) at DSHS. Summer dates:V,JV (M,T,W,Th-6/17-7/2,T,W,Th-7/23-25) “There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going"   “Train Like A Champion”

  11. Why We Do 0 Period • The Air Force study (Scott Carrol brought it to our attention at the district’s late start committee meeting 2 years ago). The reason that Air Force is such a great test model is due to the variables being isolated- everyone has the same environmental situation , diet , etc. Result: early testing group did best – academically, alertness • When we started 0 period my first year team GPA 2.4 by final year team GPA 3.3 with 100 % graduation (including7 students who arrived in Gr. 10 with a 1.5 GPA or less). • We saw a steep decline in tardies because we were able to contact students when we did not see them in 0 period. Held them accountable • Teachers reported that our football players were more alert and ready to learn • By feeding our student athletes we were ensuring that our students started the day with a meal and that that meal would be nutritious. • We saw positive change in how our students felt about themselves due to them taking care of their bodies and having the self discipline of making it to this commitment. 0 behavioral referrals for DSHS Football Team • We saw a team come together as a team due to the rigors of getting up early, wanting to be there for their teammates and proving their accountability to each other (ex. Big Brother Program). All of these traits are life long attributes that past players have referenced as life changing for them. • 0 period allows us to have access to all the facilities that we have – weight room, football field, gyms without having to try and share it or not being allowed to use it due to the spring sports that are occurring. We have 23 sports at DSHS all that use our facilities. The in season sports have priority usage in spring. So, we have limited access to facilities. 0 period rectifies this.

  12. Strength and Conditioning Champions Program • This is a comprehensive pre-season Strength and Conditioning program required and designed to help athletes and the team develop so they may reach their goal of champions • Program is conducted Monday-Thurs. starting Mon. June 17 • Other weeks are June 24-27. July 1-2. July 23-25 • Non 7-7 or lineman challenge dates Include: • Weightlifting • Plyometrics • Agilities • Speed work • Cardio conditioning • Football skills • Includes passing league dates at DSHS, Monterrey Trail, St. Mary’s, Christian Bros.. We will also be having Lineman Challenge date(s) vs. Christian Bros. and St. Mary’s and possibly MT

  15. JV/Varsity Game Schedule • Regular season schedule begins August 23rd at Ron Brown Stadium – Home of the Blue Devils !!!! • JV games play prior to Varsity games • Copy of schedule to date and important dates leading up to season in 2019 parent handbook and on backer webpage

  16. Parent/Coach Communication • As the overseer of a program that includes two teams and provides guidance for the junior Blue Devils it is physically impossible to answer every football related question that is e-mailed to me. If your question is administrative in nature (ex. scheduling, equipment question, money related, forms, etc.) please e-mail the backers, the student’s position coach or head coach of his/her team . • Understand that we will endeavor to do what is best for all individuals on the team. Sometimes parents, since they are so closely tied to their own children, are not focused on the big picture. Please trust the coaches and understand that coaches will be making a more unbiased decision than a parent would make since they represent all of their players, not just a son or daughter. • Many factors will go into playing time including work ethic, attendance, knowledge, attitude and skill level. There may be games where players may play limited or no minutes due to safety, discipline or competitive reasons, yet we will expect them to be supportive and to contribute in any way they can to be a good teammate. • Emotions can run high during a game, parents will be asked to abide by the 48 hour rule. If you have a concern during a game wait 48 hours before contacting the head coach.
