Ch. 3 Bellringer Page • Be sure to go over your Ch. 3 bellringer page. • We started on Sept. 25th.
Atoms • Made of protons (+), neutrons(neutral), electrons(-) • Protons and Neutrons found in nucleus, electrons found in cloud outside nucleus • Elements are made up ______ kind of atom. • ATOMS make up MATTER.
Bonding • If electrons are SHARED, it’s a COVALENT bond. • Polar = Positive on one end and negative on the other end. • Ex. Water is a polar molecule
4 Special Properties Of Water • Ice Floats • Cohesion • Adhesion • Water holds heat very well
pH Scale • ACID= gives off H+ ions (hydronium ions) • BASE= gives off OH- ions (hydroxide ions) • H+ plus OH- will give you WATER • pH SCALE: basic
Organic vs. Inorganic • Organic = contains carbon • Inorganic= doesn’t contain carbon
ATP • ATP, a molecule used to store energy. • The energy is kept in high energy bonds between the phosphates
Carbohydrates • Monomer=monosaccharide • Polymer= polysaccharide • Used as energy for the body • Know what they look like… • Plants store excess sugar as starch & cellulose • Remember cellulose is for strength
Lipids • Monomer=3 fatty acids + glycerol • Polymer= fats & oils • Used in the body for storing energy • Know what these look like…
Proteins • Monomer=Amino Acids • Polymer= Polypeptides • Peptide bonds join AA • Know the 3 parts of an AA: NH2, COOH, R (side group) ENZYMES: Reduce the Activation Energy needed for a reaction
Nucleic Acids-DNA & RNA • Monomer= Nucleotide • Know the 3 parts; • Sugar, Base, Phosphate • Polymer= Nucleic Acid • Used in the body to store genetic info. • 2 strands in DNA are held together by weak H bonds.
