K-8 Focal Points • Curriculum Focal Points are the most important mathematical topics for each grade level. • They comprise related ideas, concepts, skills, and procedures that form the foundation for understanding and using mathematics and lasting learning. • Curriculum Focal Points have been integral in the revision of many state math standards for Pre-K through grade 8.
Oregon K-8 Standards What has changed from the 2002 Math Standards: • Approximately 20 content standards at each grade, which is a reduction from the current level of about 60 standards per grade. • The content standards are still the basis for curriculum and assessment. • The number of topics addressed at each grade has been reduced by an average of 50%. • The overall breadth of the K-12 standards remains largely intact. • The developmental progression of the content standards is clearer than in the past.
Oregon K-8 Standards There are a few shifts in emphasis in the standards: • Grades 1 to 5 have a heavier emphasis on Number and Operations. • Grades 6 to 8 have a heavier emphasis on preparation for Algebra. • Most of the Data Analysis and Probability standards have been shifted to middle school.

Some Topics That Will be Addressed • All HS students develop competence in and a disposition for math reasoning. • Difficulties inherent in offering multiple versions of similar courses and tracking. • Continuing gaps in achievement for some groups of students. • Need for high expectations.
Cont… • The need for a coherent program that: • Encourages reasoning • Uses technology to support reasoning • Is aligned vertically and horizontally – not just between MS and HS, but with post secondary • Uses assessment to contribute to student progress.
In Summary Everyone should re-focus on reasoning – Parents, Students, Teachers, etc… There will be NO grade level or course level topic lists
Current Situation Today’s Oregon diploma requirements are lowest in the nation We are 45th in nation for college going rates We are 2nd in the country for unemployment
Shifts & Trends- Oregon • Currently • 28% with a bachelors degree or higher (10% graduate degree) • 26% with a formal 2-year degree or equivalent • 34% with a high school diploma or some college • 12% less than high school • Governor/Legislature Goal • 40% with a bachelors degree or higher • 40% with a 2-year degree or equivalent • 20% with a high school diploma
Focus is Needed • State economy is in flux; budgets likely to be terrible • Economic recovery is dependent on skilled workforce • MATH is the gateway to improving Oregon’s economy • Post-secondary education is necessary for all students
