Use this activity to simulate water scarcity and challenge participants to prioritize different water needs. Distribute cards and keep track of family needs with tally charts.

Print slides as handouts – 6 per page – as supplies cards to be exchanged for ‘buckets’ of water You will need at least one set per ‘family’
The Leader will also need – • matchsticks or counters to use on the tally chart • a stopwatch or minute timer to use where ‘chance’ cards demand that a ‘family’ stop working for one minute
Print a set of these cards as handouts (6 slides per page) for the Leader The Leader can give a card at random to a ‘family’ to increase the challenge Chance cards
Your village now has a pump nearby so you can get water more quickly.Each bucket you cut out is now worth 2 buckets
There has been no rain this year. The river you collect your water from as run dry.One person must stop work to look for a new water supply.
One of your young relatives got sick and died. All your family must go to the funeral.Everyone stop work for 1 minute
The water in the river is very dirty.Three people in your family are ill from drinking dirty water. They must stop working for one minute.
You hurt your back carrying the heavy water. It is much harder to carry water now.You must do all your work (cutting) with the opposite hand to normal one.
The track home is rough and you have spilled your water. Tear up any buckets only half cut out.
Family tally card Print one copy of the next slide for the Leader. The Leader keeps a tally with match sticks against each ‘family’ where more than one ‘bucket is needed for a water need (e.g water for crops = 4 buckets).
