What was the Black Death? The Culprits Bubonic Plague Fleas carried the bacteria to rats; would also bite humans
The Symptoms Bulbous Septicemic Form:almost 100% mortality rate.

Do you know this song? “Ring around the Rosy” = rose colored ring around the sores • Ring around the rosy • A pocketful of posies • "Ashes, Ashes" • We all fall down! “Pocketful of posies” = sweet smelling flowers to ward off the stench of the dead/dying “ashes to ashes” = achoo (sneezing) “we all fall down” = you’re dead
How did the Black Death spread to/across Europe? • Analyze one side of the map handout and answer the questions! • If you are having trouble seeing the map, I will provide a color one for you on the powerpoint… • When finished, share with your partner and discuss: • Do you think the black death was unavoidable?
How did the Black Death spread to Europe? • - Trade routes (The Silk Road)! Mongols spread it to China, Middle East, India • Battles also helped the disease spread. As Mongols fought with Christians, they catapulted dead bodies into Christian cities • This is our first example of “germ warfare” in history
And how did it spread ACROSS Europe? • 1348-A boat arrived (from Constantinople) to Messina Italy • Everyone on board was dead • As people took the goods off the boats, the germs (and rats) started to spread • People didn’t know what caused the spread and just kept trading • European cities were so dirty and that did not help! • But certain communities, like the Jews, were more isolated and had cleaner daily practices, so they were not affected as much.
