Municipal area of Ravenna • Superficie 654,88 kmq • Population 149.084 inhabitants • Geographical localization • The municipal area of Ravenna is located in the Emilia-Romagna, region of Northern Italy, and spreads over a large area (it is the second largest municipal area after Rome).
Natural Areas Ravenna is made up of some of the most beautiful natural areas of the Po Delta Park characterized from the presence of an extraordinary variety of landscapes and natural habitats which derive from the interaction between the natural evolutionary processes of the territory and the anthropic activities. Extension of the protected areas: about 19.000 hectares. There are numerous animals and plants species, many of which are protected by international and national regulations, but the biggest wealth comes from the avifauna. There are 234 species birds; the large variety of species is due to the elevated bio-diversity of the area. Many different types of habitats can be found which leads to many possibilities for nesting and feeding.
The port and the productive activities The city is inland, but is connected to the Adriatic Sea by a canal harbour. The port, with more than 24 million tons handled every year, is one of the most important in Italy and matches trading and industrial vocation. The port houses industries including chemicals, energy, metallurgy, agricultural foodstuffs and offshore.
Ravenna, Mosaic Capital Ravenna is one of the most singular and rich cities from an historical and artistic point of view. Capital of the barbarian kingdoms and the Byzantine empire, protagonist of European history between the fifth and sixth centuries, the city was enhanced by the construction of some of Italy’s most extraordinary monuments. The city houses an amazing collection of basilicas, baptisteries and mausoleums with enchanting mosaic artworks. Eight of its monuments have been declared by UNESCO as patrimonies of humanities for their supreme display of mosaic work: San Vitale, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, Battistero Neoniano, Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and Sant’apollinare in Classe, Battistero degli Ariani, Cappella Arcivescovile, and the Mausoleo di Teodorico.
Functions of the Municipality of Ravenna • The municipality of Ravenna is a local public authority. • It carries out all the administrative functions regarding the population and the territory. In particular the organic fields of the welfare, the economic development, the structure and use of territory, in the ways established by the national and regional laws. • The organizational model of Ravenna local authority previews the articulation in 8 Business Units. The Business Unit 6 “Territorial Planning” includes the “Environmental Department” that takes care of the environmental protection and improvement of the life quality in the city.
Energy Plan • Seen the petroleum cost always growing and the so distant Kyoto aims,among the principal activities of the environmental departement, there is the developing of the Energy Plan in order to reduce the energy consumption, • The Energy Plan is based on: • Study of the main features of the present local energetic system • Definition of the main goals and strategic guidelines in order to achieve a local sustainable energy system • Individuation of actions and politics in order to • increase the efficiency of the energy system • promote the renewable energy sources • decrease the impact of the energy consumptions

MAIN ACTIONS PROMOTED IN THE MOBILITY SECTOR • CONTRIBUTION CAMPAIGN TO PRIVATE CITIZENS FOR THE TRANSFORMATION TO GPL OR METHANE OF THEIR CARS OR SUBSTITUTION OF A NON-CATALYTIC CONVERTER CAR WITH A LOW IMPACT VEHICLE • CONTRIBUTION CAMPAIGN FOR THE PURCHASE OF LOW IMPACT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES • PURCHASE OF LOW IMPACT VEHICLES FOR THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT • INCREASING OF THE CYCLE TRACKS AND OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT OFFER
What can the Municipality of Ravenna do ? • We will have to do, in the next future, an important, complex but necessary work to invert the trend we have seen before. With this aim we fully share the MUSEC project strategy, based on: • Organic energy policies (actions of the local authorities, adequate town planning and regulation, increas of renewable energy sources, ecc.); • Innovative Financing mechanisms; • Communication programs; • I am sure that the integration between Ravenna energy plan and MUSEC project will bring concrete and positive results.
