Job 14:1-15 (NIV)“Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble. They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure. Do you fix your eye on them? Will you bring them before you for judgment? Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!..
…A person’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed. So look away from him and let him alone, till he has put in his time like a hired labourer…
…“At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant…
But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more. As the water of a lake dries up or a riverbed becomes parched and dry, so he lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, people will not awake or be roused from their sleep. “If only you would hide me in the grave and conceal me till your anger has passed!...
…If only you would set me a time and then remember me! If someone dies, will they live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come. You will call and I will answer you; you will long for the creature your hands have made.”
Let us look at the three things Job does regarding this whole subject of whether there is life after death: • 1. The Concern He Addresses. • 2. The Change He Awaits. • 3. The Consistency He Affirms.
1. The Concern He Addresses. • V.14 “If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.” • The oldest question in the world. Job, the oldest book in the Bible. It was written approx 3,500 years ago and yet the subject matter is more relevant today than at any other time.
People ask why is there suffering? • Why do bad things happen to good people? • Is there life after death? • As that question plagued the heart of Job, so it still plagues humanity to this day! • Is death the end? • What lies beyond death, if anything?
Ecclesiastes 3:11He has made everything beautiful in his time: also he has set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end.
Because Job lived in the day before there was any recorded scripture, men were often in the dark concerning some great spiritual matters. Their vision was limited in scope. We can be thankful that we have the New Testament, the words of Christ, the Holy Spirit to help us in our understanding !
2. The Change He Awaits. • Job answers his own question as inspired by the Spirit. • Job 19:25-26 “For I know that my redeemer lives, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God”
Jesus answered his question at the grave of Lazarus when he said “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25). • Paul answered his question when he wrote to the Church at Corinth “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.(1 Corinthians 15:52)
The believer in Christ shall experience...... • 1. A Change in Address • One day whether through death or through the rapture of the church we are going to change locations, addresses. We are going to our heavenly home that Christ has prepared for all those who have believed on him !
2. A Change in Appearance • 1 John 3:2 - “Beloved now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
3. A Change in Attitudes • The attitudes of this world which are evident in this sinful world such as prejudice, jealousy, hatred shall not be present in heaven. Heaven will be a place of complete peace, harmony and love!
4. A Change in Actions • We shall finally, and totally be delivered from this world of sin, and will be in a place where there will be no sin!
3. The Consistency He Affirms. • “All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come. You will call and I will answer you: you will long for the creature your hands have made.” (Job 14:14-15) • Job is saying that I will wait patiently. I will be consistent until my change comes.
What are we to do until our time comes or until our Lord comes ? • We are to live consistently! • a. Consistent in our worship. • b. Consistent in our walk. • c. Consistent in our work. • d. Consistent in our witness.
