1. Powerful Typhoon Haishen battered the Asian nations – Japan and South Korea causing major damage to both the countries. The typhoon is categorized as Category 4 storm which means that properly constructed framed houses could suffer severe damage to roof and exterior walls. The typhoon after causing havoc in Japan and South Korea is now heading to North Korea. However, Korea’s weather department reported that the typhoon is slowing. Impact on Japan Impact on Japan Almost the whole of southern main island of Kyushu in Japan was hit by Typhoon Haishen on September 6, 2020. The Japanese authorities had recommended evacuation advisories of people living in high-risk areas for flooding rivers or high tides and advised them to move to shelters. The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued highest level warning to its people of potentially record rainfall, unprecedented winds, high tides and large ocean swells. The typhoon brought violent winds and heavy rains, massive blackouts and disrupted transportation and some mobile networks. Many department stores, schools, supermarkets and shops in Kyushu were closed temporarily. The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic made it even difficult for evacuees as they were worried of being exposed to virus in shelter homes. Also, the shelters were accepting less than half of their normal capacity in order to comply with the social distancing norms. Impact on South Korea Impact on South Korea After causing havoc in Japan, Typhoon Haishen made landfall in Ulsan, north of Busan, South Korea’s second largest city. The storm led to heavy winds leading to power cut of almost 5,000 households on the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s Forest Service raised the landslide alert to its highest level. The Korea Herald reported that typhoon has caused significant travel disruptions, power cuts and tree damage across the region.

Impact on North Korea Impact on North Korea Typhoon Haishen marks the third significant strike within a week’s time on the Korean Peninsula, following Maysak and Typhoon Bavi which struck North Korea recently in end August. The residents had little time to recover from the previous storms. However, the country seems to be all prepared.
