Comparing Battery Models • With Nico Peterschmidt of ? University, we have compared the predictions of our battery software with empirical battery behavior. • In particular, we looked at the predicted and measured battery lifetimes with two commercially available batteries (BAE models OGi, OPzS).
The KiBAM and Rainflow Models • Our standalone battery model uses the Kinetic Battery Model (KiBAM) to simulate battery power response under load. • For battery lifetime, we use a variation of Miner's rule to count cycles and total cyclical battery damage. • We find the load cycles from the battery's state-of-charge vector which is reduced to a series of peaks; cycles in the peaks are counted using Socie's Rainflow algorithm.
Model Input: Empirical Battery Data(i.e. what we started with)
Initial Results Are Promising/Reassuring/OK • It was found that our battery model overestimates the battery lifetime by 40-60%. • The results are reasonable given: • The simplicity of the model; • The modest input requirements needed for modeling: for a given battery, 4-6 constant current charging and discharging curves, V vs. Ah, are sufficient to derive KiBAM parameters and start the simulation.
Other Systems Modeling Work • We are re-writing the Hybrid2 software with several aims: • Be able to handle more complex systems, including DG situations. • The software itself will be modernized and streamlined using fully object-oriented design. • The software will be written as a web-based application for ease of deployment and maintenance.
