The Five Components of Fitness • Cardiorespiratory Endurance: ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to utilize O2 during physical activity. • Muscular Strength: amount of force a muscle can exert. • Muscular Endurance: ability of a muscle to perform physical tasks without becoming fatigued. • Flexibility: ability to move a body part through a full range of motion. • Body Composition: ratio of body fat to lean body tissue.
Cardiorespiratory Endurance Several ways to test your level of endurance -One mile run -Step test -PACER test
Muscular Strength vs. Endurance Strength for activities involving lifting, pushing, jumping. Endurance for performing these activities repeatedly or for long periods of time. Test to measure strength and endurance are sit-ups, push-ups, flexed arm hang. How can muscular strength & endurance help give you good posture and fewer back problems?
Flexibility Flexibility can increase your athletic performance, help you feel comfortable, reduce risk of strain & injury. Sit & Reach & the Hand Touch are two ways to test flexibility.
Body Composition % Fat compared to EVERYTHING else (water, bones, muscles, connective tissue) Males >25% Females >30% Tests for body composition Include a caliper test and hydrostatic weighing. BMI Calculator Balance your diet and participate in P.A. regularly!! @ risk for CVD
To become physically fit you must be fit in all the components.
Improve your fitness through exercise Exercise: purposeful physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive and that improves or maintains personal fitness. Aerobic Exercise: any activity that uses large muscle groups and is rhythmic in nature. Anaerobic Exercise: intense short bursts of activity in which muscles work so hard they produce energy without using oxygen. How can you use the different types of exercise to improve your elements of fitness?
