  2. Who is Louise Arbour? • Our school’s namesake is the President and CEO of the International Crisis Group. • The International Crisis Group is a non-profit, independent organization committed to preventing and resolving deadly conflict.

Who is Louise Arbour • Born: Feb. 10, 1947 in Montreal, Quebec (Her parents owned a hotel chain; she was known for irreverence when editor of her high school magazine). • 1977: Admitted to the Ontario bar (held various positions, including research officer for the Law Reform Commission of Canada, vice-president of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and associate dean of Osgoode Hall Law School).

Who is Louise Arbour? • 1987: Appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario (High Court of Justice). • 1990: Appointed to the Court of Appeal of Ontario. • 1996: Appointed chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia from 1996-99. • She issued the first ever international warrant for the arrest of then sitting Yugoslavia president Slobodan Milosevic on charges of murder and crimes against humanity.

  5. Who is Louise Arbour? • In 1999, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, a role she served until 2004.

  6. Who is Louise Arbour? • She left the Supreme Court in 2004 after accepting an appointment as United High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). • The OHCHR has a mandate to protect and promote all human rights from the international community.

  7. Who is Louise Arbour? • Today, she is dedicating herself to the International Crisis Group, an organization whose goal is to prevent conflicts in hot spots around the world before they happen.

Louise Arbour: Honours • Later this month, Canada Post plans to honour four outstanding and well-known Canadians in a new stamp series called Difference Makers. • Louise Arbour will be among the first Canadians to be recognized. She is joined on the new stamp with images of Rick Hansen, Michael J. Fox and Sheila Watt-Cloutier.

Louise Arbour: Honours • Late last year, Egale Canada recognized the Honourable Louise Arbour as the 2011 Egale Canada Leadership Award recipient. • The award is presented annually to those Canadians whose leadership has advanced Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans human rights both at home and abroad. • During Madame Arbour’s tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, she was the first High Commissioner to speak openly about LGBT rights. • The award was presented during Egale’s 2011 Gala, Speak Easy: Stand Out, Speak Up.
