  1. Multidisciplinary Frontiers of Magnetic ResonanceEMAR Research Networking Program Launched April 13th 2007

  2. EMAR motivation: bridging gaps • National societies and discussion groups are not coordinated (European dimension) • Different specialities talk different scientific dialects (Interdisciplinarity) • Cutting edge developments diffuse slowly to the users. Capabilities of state of the art instrumentation in isolated locations may not be always used because of knowledge barriers (Training)

  3. EMAR Objectives • Facilitate, intregrate and disseminate the work carried out by National NMR and EPR communities in Europe (NETWORKING) • Stimulate the development of MR in interdisciplinary areas by coordination and exchange between groups in different areas (EXPLORATION) • Promote the transition of concepts and techniques from the frontiers to basic users (TRAINING)

  4. Multidisciplinary Frontiers of Magnetic Resonance (EMAR)Prof. Geoffrey Bodenhausen, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, FranceProf. Beat Meier, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Prof. Miquel Pons, IRB, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain • 18Member Organisationsfrom 16 countries contribute to this program: • Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF), Austria • Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen(FWO), Belgium • NMR Centre of the Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Croatia • Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Czech Republic • Czech Science Foundation (GACR), Czech Republic • Estonian Science Foundation, Estonia • Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), France • Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), Germany • Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungary • Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA), Hungary • Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland • Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnología (FCT), Portugal • Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovak Republic • Slovenian NMR Center, Slovenia • Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Spain • Comisión Intermininisterial de Ciencia y Tecnología (CICYT), Spain • Swedish Research Council, Sweden • the Swiss National Science Foundation, Switzerland • ESF RNP Administrator: Chantal Durant • ESF Science Officer Liaison: Patrick Bressler

  5. EMAR Instruments • EUROMAR conferences (NETWORKING) • Interdisciplinary Frontier Workshops (EXPLORATION) • Training activities and schools (TRAINING)

  6. EMAR Budget Expenditure 2007-2009 Anual Budget: 83.000 €

  7. 2007 Towards single-spin physics Joint tutorial on EPR, solid-state NMR and liquid-state NMR. 2008 3D Structure determination of proteins by solid-state NMR Basic NMR theory and hands-on practical course. Metabolomics at the frontier of magnetic resonance and systems biology. Electron Spin Resonance Imaging. 2009 Dynamic Nuclear Polarization: New Techniques, Methods and Applications NMR of biological solids: membrane proteins, fibrils NMR in virus research. 2010 Paramagnetic tagging in NMR European Training School on Advanced EPR. FRONTIERS OF MR IN EUROPE Trainees 2007-2009: 350

  8. Visibility, and European Added Value EUROMAR 2007-2009 TARRAGONA EUROMAR PARTICIPATION ST.PETERSBURG Participation 2007-2009: 1800 people Students sponsored by EMAR: 300 Participating countries: 50 (26 European) Outreach: Iberoamerica (Tarragona) Eastern Europe (St. Petersburg) Asia and America (Florence)

  9. EMAR countries are leaders in MR EUROMAR PARTICIPATION A large number of countries contribute to European leadership Asian countries are approaching fast NMR OR EPR (2004-2009) EUROPE: 40.598 (EMAR 70%) CJIK: 30.476 USA: 21.414

  10. EMAR countries are leaders in MR EUROMAR PARTICIPATION

  11. THE FUTURE EUROMAR 2010: WORLD WIDE NMR CONFERENCE (with ISMAR) EUROMAR 2011: FRANKFURT Training/Workshop proposals received: Solid-state NMR school NMR insights into hydration effects Board induced actions: Enhance the geographical distribution of training activities/workshops Consolidate the worldwide leadership of Europe in Magnetic Resonance EUROMAR PARTICIPATION
