How to Get Students’ Attention? • 82% of communication is non-verbal • Thanks to Michael Grinder – non-verbal communication expert • Five strategies • Freeze Body • Above Whisper • Teacher Only One Speak • Silence is Gold • Use Influence, Not Power
Freeze Body • What’s wrong? • Your still body communicate so much! • Start and end your class with still body
Above Whisper • How loud do you need to be? • Your voice goes up Student’s collective voice goes up too • Wait for student’s volume to drop • Right moment – may increase volume • Then go back to low voice • Patient – wait for everyone to quiet
Silence is Gold • What’s wrong? • Direct Eye Contact • Use Gestures • Point to Sign, Rules or Instructions
Use Influence, Not Power • “Power” only gets students to comply under your presence • Any damage from using “power” might not be recovered!
