GBIF Usage of Taxonomic Names • Intended User Base • Completely open-ended • Taxonomists and other scientific researchers • Governments and policy makers • General public • Users and applications • Intended Functionality • Provide access to authoritative name data for all taxonomic groups, including taxonomic hierarchies and synonymy • Index networked biodiversity data using taxonomic names • Use both known synonymy and taxonomic hierarchies to improve results of user requests for all classes of biodiversity data • Support access via vernacular names • Also provide access to lists of taxonomic names other than taxonomic authority files (regional checklists, red lists, etc.) – implies need for name list metadata • Handle names correctly for all codes • Multiple user interfaces
