About our salvation Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age(1:3-5) • 1. We live in an evil world (age)! • 2. We have been rescued from it! • 3. It is all through Christ’s sacrifice!
Discerning Paul’s purpose, the central idea of Galatians • Does Paul state his reason for writing Galatians? If not, are there clues, indications of his purpose?
Galatians 1:6-8 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!
Galatians 1:9-10 As we have said before, so say I again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. • “gospel” appears 11 times, • all in the first 4 chapters!

Key verses of Galatians: Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, 2:16 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, stand firm, then, do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 5:1
Controversy at Galatia • Strikes at the very heart of the gospel • Substitutes “another” gospel (non-gospel) • Misrepresents grace • Eliminates the cross • Brings bondage
Central Idea of Galatians Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone!

Galatians 3:1-2 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
