Fragments • Are a group of words that do not have a subject and a predicate • Do not express a complete thought. • Are incomplete sentences. • Do not provide enough information for the reader to understand.
An example of a fragment … • The party last night.
Is this a complete sentence or a fragment? • The party last night. • The group of words has a subject … ? • But what is the predicate … ?
When a sentence is incomplete, • you ask yourself, • what is it about the party last night? • what happened? • what was it like?
Add a predicate • When we add: • was very crowded. We now have a complete thought. The party last night was very crowded.
How do fragments occur? • Fragments occur when a group of words begins with a connect word, such as: • because • when • If and the thought is not completed.
Look at this fragment: • If you leave on the earlier train. • This group of words does not tell what will happen if you leave on the earlier train.
Fix the fragment! • Combine the fragment with another sentence to make a complete thought. • If you leave on the earlier train, I will drive you to the station. • The subject is I. • The predicate is will drive you to the station.
Fix fragments by: • Adding it to the sentence before or after it. • Reword or add words to the fragment to give it a subject and a predicate.
