2020 Climate strategy • Jaap Petraeus
Challenges for the dairy sector • Agreement between Agriculture sector and ministries of Environment, Agriculture, Economic Affairs: • Reduction GHG emissions 30 % in 2020 related to 1990 • Generate biogas of 500 million m3 per year • Have the lowest GHG emission per kg of milk • 5% methane reduction per cow related to 2007 • Produce wind power of about 3 PJ • Expectation that the volume of milk will increase after 2015 (end of quota limitation) • Expectation that number of cows will increase Pro-active approach to reach the sustainability challenges is necessary
S Farm responsible for 72% of dairy chain GHG emissions
- 12% reduction required between 2009 and 2020
Biogas and feed main levers Re-use of digistate is pilot project • Additional improvements: • Manure separation and processing • Reduction of fossil energy use at farm level • Wind and solar
Conclusions • Ambitions are high to reach sustainability objectives in the total chain • Cooperative approach with of dairy industry with primary sector is necessary to reach the objectives • Biogas generation and cattle feed solutions are key innovation issues • With a cooperative approach the primary sector can generate the their own energy and the energy for the dairy industry in a sustainable way (energy neutral dairy sector) • Mineral closing loop of digistate can help to improve the business cases at farm level
