Women’s roles in society “Just for Show” From 1900 to 1930 the role of women didn’t change much -Women were very Submissive -Women were to obey their Husbands -Bear and raise children -And make no decisions forthemselves WWII allowed women to develop their own identity Over 70% of women go to work - Factories - Teachers - Nurses Women become the providers for their families
1920’s Early 1900’s Dress 1930’s 1940’s -The theme in this era is conservative emphasizing on: Corsets Multiple layering Impacted by renaissance romanticism “The Roaring Twenties” Women start to etch their own concepts of attire: Boyish look Free flowing garments Shorter hemlines Cloche hat Short Bobbed hair Flapper dresses The Great Depression The transition from homemaker to the working class: The style went back to being more feminine Glamour/Style/Fashion Form fitting garments Business suits were introduced to the working woman During WWII Women took on the role of the man There wasn’t a big concern for fashion They wore factory clothes Overalls Bandannas
Rebirth of SocietyAfter WWII • The men returned home and resumed dominate positions in society • Procreation was at an all time high which lead to the Baby Boom era

Dress 1960’s-1970’s 1980’s Mid-Late 1950’s In the 1970s women had a new range of fashion open to them. Influenced by the women's liberation movement and the protest years of the 1960s, American women were no longer willing to follow the lead of fashion designers. Women wanted more than one look and seemed to thrive on choice.
Advertisements set unrealistic expectations of women: as breadwinner, mother, and sexy wife, that it was hard for the average woman to deliver
Roles 1950’s 1980’s 1960’s/1970’s -Motherhood was embraced once again with the start of the baby boom era -The role of housewife was resumed and accepted bringing safety and comfort after the war -Television Shows Like “The Cleavers” and “Leave it to Beaver” modeled the perfect All American wife and mother The family concept loses it’s American luster: -Divorce rates increase -Single mother families emerge -The start of the multi-tasking mom • The women liberation movement takes off and women start to take ownership of their lives: • Feministic empowerment • Transition from home to workforce • Social/literary freedom
