Tekes Contribution to European Fusion Roadmap Seppo Karttunen and Tuomas Tala VTT / Association Euratom-Tekes
Outline:- present Tekes programme- future plans to participate in fusion experiments- EFDA physics and materials as well as the PPPT activities- ITER and F4E R&D contributions
Present Tekes Programme • EFDA Activities (28 ppy): • JET and AUG experiments and modelling • Diagnostics development • Code development and integration • Task Forces PWI and ITM • Materials modelling • Goal Oriented Training • F4E & ITER Activities (18 ppy): • DTP2 platform for divertor maintenance studies, hosted by VTT in Tampere • Magnetic diagnostics • Assembly welding tools and robots • CODAC
Future Participation in JET and AUG Experiments • For Association Tekes, participation in JET activities is vital: • Task Force Leaders/Deputies (presently 3) • S/T Order and Notifications and JOC secondees (presently 2) • In near future ITER-like Wall (ILW) experiment at high priority • Preparation in the DT campaign • Real European-wide collaboration very important to a small association • Estonian Research Unit participates in the JET TF-FT work programmeActive involvement in the AUG workprogramme to be continued: • AUG experiments and modelling (plasma-wall, edge, transport, fast particles, …) • Diagnostics development • Ceiling of Baseline Support (BS) a real problem here • Future devices where collaboration foreseen: W7-X, Satellite tokamaks (JT-60SA, …)
Future EFDA Physics & Materials Activities • Emphasis in EFDA physics studies on • Transport, SOL, plasma-wall and burning plasma physics studies (JET, AUG, TF-PWI, TGs, ITPA) • Modelling, code development (ASCOT, ELMFIRE) and integration (TF-ITM) • Diagnostics development (JET, AUG & F4E/ITER) • Goal Oriented Training • Estonian Research Unit participates in the TF-PWI work programme Materials research mainly for PPPT - FeCrC-potential and He effects in stainless steels - MD simulations of mixed materials of PFC - ODS steels characterisation - Be-C-W-potentials, BeD chemical erosion
EFDA Power Plant Physics and Technology Tekes will participate in the 3PT Implementing Agreement which is under preparation • modelling (edge/SOL, fast particles, transport, integrated modelling) • materials research • diagnostics (NPA and magnetics) • remote handling PS funding and BS ceiling are serious issues, in particular, if some of the present F4E/ITER activity is replaced by EFDA Tasks
R&D Contribution for F4E and ITER • To develop the Divertor Test Platform (DTP2) as a R&D and testing centre for remote handling operations for ITER • Diagnostics – micromechanical magnetometer (MEMS) • Assembly welding issues and welding robots • Materials research • ITER scenario development and modelling support • R&D support to industry related to ITER procurements • ITER CODAC work
Summary / Future EFDA priorities for Tekes 1) JET has the highest priority - it is very important to small Associations - it strengthens the integration of the EU programme 2) AUG is also very important for Tekes programme- flexible machine - Tekes integrated really well into the AUG workprogramme 3) PPPT / Demo - remote handling - materials and plasma modelling 4) F4E and ITER - remote handling systems - diagnostics - assembly welding issues and robot - ITER scenario modelling
