Author Study Overview • Media Curriculum to begin before Tedd Arnold’s visit to familiarize students with his work • Art Curriculum to be used after author visit since seeing his art demonstration will aide in students’ ability to visualize concepts for art projects
Media Curriculum • Collect all books in the school’s library written and or illustrated by Tedd Arnold • Work with the public library to obtain many of the Tedd Arnold books that the school does not own and multiple copies of as many of the books as possible • Put books on display. • Do not allow students to check out individual books until after author studies are completed. Only allow the check out of school books. • Allow teachers to check out books for their classes once the media pre-visit sharing is completed. Teachers may check out school or public library copies. • Share books with all classes as they come to the media center the week before Mr. Arnold’s visit
Media Curriculum (cont.) • Share books with grade K-2 classes as they come for their specials time. • After reading discussions will be different depending upon the grade level • Kindergarten discussions (reading objectives - 2.02, 2.07, 3.02, 3.043 ) • Read aloud: Huggly Gets Dressed, Fly Guy, and Parts • Which book is written to help kids get ready to “grow up”? Why do you think so? • Which books in the display do you think would be like that book? Why do you think so? • What other books in the display do you think will be like Parts? Why? • What other books in the display do you think will be like Fly Guy? Why?
Media Curriculum (cont.) • Grade 1 Discussions: (reading objectives – 2.03, 2.04, 2.041, 2.11) • Read aloud: No Jumping on the Bed!, Fly Guy, and Parts • After reading each book, ask what happened at the beginning, middle, and end. • Show the students No More Water in the Tub after reading No Jumping on the Bed! and ask them to predict what will happen in the story. Do a picture walk to check students’ ideas. • Grade 2 Discussions: (reading objectives-2.0191, 2.0192, 2.12, 2.17) • Read aloud: No Jumping on the Bed!, Fly Guy, and Parts • Have students predict what NoJumping on the Bed! will be about. Do a picture walk then ask for adjustments in predictions. Evaluate predictions after reading. • After reading Parts, ask the children what made the little boy so confused about what he heard in the book . Did he feel better in the end? How do you know? • After reading Fly Guy, have the students retell the plot and identify the problem and solution in the story
Media Curriculum (cont.) • Share books with grade 3-5 classes during first half of their classroom check-out times. • Display Fly Guy, Parts, and Huggly Gets Dressed • Read small excerpts from each book. Discuss the following: (author’s purpose and inference reading objectives) • What audiences do you think different books were intended for ? Why? • Look at different illustration styles. Discuss why different styles were chosen for each book. • Book Talk Rat Life Tedd Arnold’s first YA novel with the fifth grade only • Offer copies of the book to fifth grade teachers for classroom read aloud
Art Curriculum • Kindergarten and Grade 1 (Art Objective 4.03) • After seeing some of the “READ” posters that were created and posted in the media center and at the ALA online store found at the website http://www.alastore.ala.org/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=157, the children will discuss poster ideas slogans to encourage kids to read • Using the Huggly coloring pictures found at the website www.teddarnoldbooks.comcoloring.html, the students will create posters to help promote reading. • Grades 2 and 3 (Art Objective 7.01) • After looking at several enlarged pictures of Fly Guy in various positions in the books, the students will learn to draw bug eyes and Fly Guy • Small groups of students will work together to illustrate a short (3-5 frame) comic strip given to them
Art Curriculum (cont) • Grades 4 and 5 (Art Objective 2.01) • Students will view Tedd Arnold’s step-by-step method for creating his illustrations. The slideshow can be found at www.teddarnoldbooks.com/drawing.html • The art teacher will supply the students with Tedd Arnold “coloring” pictures of his characters found at the website www.teddsrnoldbooks.com/coloring.html • The students will use several class periods to follow the author’s 7-step process to create their own illustrations
