Pablo PicassoCannes, 1956 Lighting: Is natural because it seems to be coming through a window. The window is positioned in the right wall of the photograph, so the light is coming from the right as well. Main subject: Pablo Picasso, because he is in the center of the photograph, and it’s also the title. Composition: The lines from all of the different art sculptures create good texture and makes this photo unique. Communication:Newman is trying to document how artistic Picasso really is. I selected this photograph because it has a lot to look at, and seemed unique and interesting.
Alfried Krupp July 6, 1963 in Essen, Germany Lighting: This lighting is artificial because it’s taken indoors. The light is mostly coming from the ceiling. Subject: Alfried Krupp, because he’s in the center and his name is the title. Composition: The fact that there’s so many different lights and textures makes this photo unique. Communication: Newman is trying to demonstrate what Alfried Krupp has made and accomplished. I chose this photo because it looked very unique and busy.
John F. KennedyWhite House, 1961 Lighting: The lighting is natural because its being taken outside. The light seems to be coming from behind him. Subject: John F. Kennedy because he is in the center of the photo and his name is the title. Composition: The rule of thirds help this photo look good. Also the structure of the white house helps add a striking factor. Communication: Newman is obviously taking a portrait of the president to show the public. I chose this photo because I recognized the subject.
Willie “The Lion” SmithNew York, 1960 Lighting: Is artificial because it’s taken indoors. The lighting is very faint, and it makes the photo dark. Subject: Is Willie Smith, because his name is in the title and is the only person in the photo. Composition: The faded lighting and texture of the smoke makes this photo striking. Communication: Newman is trying to show how artistic and old fashioned Willie Smith is. I chose this photo because I like playing the piano, and I was drawn in by the suspenseful lighting.
Marilyn MonroeHollywood, 1962 Lighting: Is artificial because it’s taken indoors. It seems to be dark in the background and light towards in front. Subject: Marilyn Monroe because the title includes her name and she’s the only thing in this photograph. Composition: I think the different tones of lighting makes this photo really stand out. Communication: Newman is trying to show what Marilyn Monroe’s personality is like. I chose this photo because I recognized the subject.
Emperor of EthiopiaAddis Ababa, 1958 Lighting: It seems to be natural since it’s coming from the windows on the left side of the room. Subject: Is the Emperor of Ethiopia, because his name is the title and it’s his palace. Composition: The luxurious palace definitely makes this photo striking. The different patterns and textures create depth to the photo. Communication: Newman is trying to express how the Emperor of Ethiopia lives. I chose this photo because of the luxurious background of the Emperor’s palace.
