  1. Formulating Shared Vision, Mission, Strategies, Goals and Objectives: An Exercise in Motivation and Leadership. Dr. PRAMOD B. SHRESTHA Professor (retired) Dept. of Mechanical Engineering Institute of Engineering Kathmandu, Nepal 28 June 2016

  2. Look, look, look to the rainbow,Follow the fellow who follows the dream

  3. There is no more powerful engine driving an individual toward excellence and long-range success than an attractive, worthwhile and achievable VISION of the future, widely shared.

  4. So what is a Vision? • A vision is a realistic, credible, attractive future for yourself. • It is a proclamation of a destination toward which you should aim, a future that in important ways is better, more successful, or more desirable for you than what is current.

  5. The core function of the vision is to ignite you into thinking beyond the your capabilities and the present environment. Only a shared vision can achieve that.

  6. Questions to answer: • If we could be what you wanted to be, what would you be five years from now? • How would you know we are there? • What do you have to really create? What are the things to be done? • What would be your distinctive strength? How do you differentiate yourselves from others?

  7. Pyramid of Vision, Mission, Strategies, Goals & Objectives Vision Mission Strategies Goals Objectives

  8. Core elements of your strategic planning are the vision, mission, strategies, goals and objectives statements.

  10. What is your Mission?

  11. Most importantly, the mission, simply by its very existence, provides a framework upon which you can build your future.

  12. VISIONAspirations or Visionary thinking of the FUTURE, BELIEFS, VALUES, NEW DIRECTION. STRATEGIES # Translation Of Mission in Concrete terms. # Directions for Actions (financial Or non-financial). # Goals are Inter-related. MISSION # Basic Purpose # Statement of Role GOALS # Guidelines for the means of accomplishing Goals. # Future Plans To achieve Change. # Specify how resources are allocated. OBJECTIVES And ACTIVITIES

  13. Concluding Statement An essential part of the development of your strategic vision is the development of a strategy as your blueprint to be able to react to unexpected situations as well as focusing on direction/s for change and improvement.

  14. FACING CHANGE – THE CONCEPT OF FOUR Cs • Paying attention to the four C’s can help us move through the change process more constructively. • CHALLENGE – See change as a challenge. • CONTROL – Focus on the things you can still control, not what you cannot. • CONNECTIONS – Rely more on your connections; network for support. • COMMITMENT – Individuals commit to change when they see the bigger picture.

  15. PUNCH LINE • VISION WITHOUT ACTION IS JUST A DREAM! • ACTION WITHOUT WIDELY SHARED VISION IS WORK AS USUAL! • WIDELY SHARED VISION WITH ACTION CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND CHANGE YOU!!

  16. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the Difference. (Serenity Prayer) “If our fondest prayers and dreams are not realized, then we should all bear in mind that the greatest glory of living lies in not never falling, but rising every time you fall.” ·You cannot force people and organizations to change. The process takes time. It’s like the Chinese bamboo tree. You plant it, and you see nothing for four years – a little bulb and a little shoot, and that’s it. Four years! And you worked diligently. On the fifth year, the Chinese bamboo tree grows eighty feet! ·

  17. üMartin Luther King expressed his dream for America in these words:   “ I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day the nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character: I have a dream today………….” All these visions are compelling and forceful. “ I HAVE A DREAM………………………….
