Project Background and Focus/Scope • Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) involvement in establishing the UEM Field of Study at AIT, and support to related disciplines in the past • UEM graduates (149 out of a total of 12,995 AIT graduates as of Aug’04 ) spread over SEA and beyond, means for: (i) Application of UEM graduate education, influencing the implementation of UEM policies; and (ii) Developing sustainable UEM practices based on global good practices on UEM • CIDA-AIT SEA-UEMA Project Focus: APPLICATIONS in three key UEM sub-sectors – water and sanitation, solid waste and air pollution • Geographical Coverage:Eight Canadian ODA eligible countries, namely, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Thailand, and Viet Nam UNEP RRC.AP: Informal consultations on eco-houses/cities

Project Goal and Purpose • Goal: To improve urban environmental conditions in SEA region. • Purpose: To attain improved implementation and sharing of sound UEM policies and good practices in three key urban environmental sub-sectors (water and sanitation, solid waste management, and air pollution). 7. UEM Graduate Education Objective: To create a pool of UEMgraduates (MSc and PhD holders) in SEA region. Description: • Full scholarships for selected candidates from Canadian ODA eligible countries in SEA to pursue master (22 months) or doctoral studies (36 months) in UEM/AIT. • 10 PhD scholarships (5 resident and 5 non-resident PhD) and 55 master scholarships over five years. • Preference given to qualified women applicants. • Preference given to applicants with work experience in UEM-related institutions/ organizations in SEA region. 8. UEM Graduate Education (cont’d.) Other GE activities: • Facilitating absorption of graduates in UEMsub-sector related work. • Supporting post-doctoral research. • Tracer study of UEM alumni (both MSc and PhD graduates), and trainees. • Making UEM graduate curriculum relevant to regional need. 9. UEM Sub-sector Networks andProfessional Support Program (SNP) Objectives: • To establish UEM networks in three sub-sectors. • To contribute to the capacity building of UEM professionals and UEM-related institutions/organizations in the region. Description: • Eligibilityof sub-sector networks membership: individuals working in the UEM field, national/city level authorities, environmental agencies, and academic/research institutions in SEA region. • 15-18 training programs to support UEM applications • 2- 4 training programs on gender equality in relation to UEM • 3 policy forums in the three sub-sectors Other SNP activities: • Project promotion • Partnership development UNEP RRC.AP: Informal consultations on eco-houses/cities

10. Alumni Demonstration Projects (ADP) Objective:To demonstrate ways and means to improve environmental conditions in selected areas of SEA countries. Description: • Eligibility of applicants: AIT alumni, preferably UEM, HSD (urban planning), or EE graduates from selected SEA countries; any AIT alumni, who are currently working in UEM-related jobs in the SEA region; UEMsub-sector network members. • 50-60 demonstration projects based on UEM good practices in the three key environmental sub-sectors. 11. Joint Action Research (JAR) Objective: to identify and devise practical UEM applications and management solutions. Description: • Action research will be undertaken in collaboration with regional/national and Canadian partners on subject areas under the three key UEM sub-sectors. • Over 5 years of the project period, 15-20 bigger scale collaborations will be carried out with regional/ national institutions and Canadian partners, and 65 small-scale JAR with graduate students. 12. Application of Research Results and Lessons Learned (ARL) Objectives: To support the application of the research results through pilot projects; and To disseminate research results and lessons learned from the other components of the project. ARL Activities: • Dissemination of research results, lessons learned, and UEM good practices through seminars, workshops, and printed/audio visual media. • Exchange of UEM expert visits. • Participation in international/regional conferences.
