Chapter 2 A Mathematical Toolkit 2.3 Visualizing Data
Objectives Graph the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Recognize linear and direct relationships and interpret the slope of the curve. Recognize quadratic and inverse relationships. 2.3 Visualizing Data
Look on the Internet and find two examples of graphs that are trying to sell a product or viewpoint. • Compose an email from your gaggle account with the following info… • Link to the graph you have chosen • What is the item or viewpoint that is being “sold”? • How could this graph be redesigned to mislead the reader. 2.3 Visualizing Data
Pocket Lab – How Far Around? 2.3 Visualizing Data
2.3 Visualizing Data • The graph above is an example of a linear relationship. The variables are directly proportional. • Equation has the form y=mx+b • The slope, m = rise/run or ∆y/∆x • The y-intecept, b is the point where the graph crosses the y-axis (vertical).
2.3 Visualizing Data • The graph above is an example of a quadratic relationship between two variables. (parabolic curve - one increases as the other increases) • y=ax2 + bx + c
2.3 Visualizing Data • The graph above is an example of a inverse relationship between two variables. (parabolic curve – one decreases as the other increases) • y=a/x or xy = a
