The Nature of Prophecy Though we usually think of prophecy as predicting future events, it is better to see the prophets as “forthtellers” of God’s message, which often included the of “foretelling” future events.
Keep in mind…. • Judgment prophecies are generally conditional. • Judgment prophecies are theoreticallyavoidable but not always so practically. • God is just as concerned with the present as He is with the future. Cf. Isaiah. 1:16-20, Mal. 4:1-3, I John 2:28-3:3, Rev. 1:1-3, 2:7, 2:11, et. al.
Other Considerations… a) The prophet was a “covenant enforcement mediator.” • The prophet’s message was generally unoriginal. • The prophet’s message was God’s, not his own. d) Prophetic messages are often recorded as if God were speaking directly in the 1stperson
Interpreting Prophecy • Using commentaries, Bible atlases, and Bible dictionaries is very helpful for interpreting prophecy. • Keep the historical context in mind. • Note the style and format of prophecy. • Be careful regarding “second meanings.”
