4. Yalta Conference, February 1945 • Big Three met in southern Russia after the defeat of Germany was obvious • Stalin wanted to create a “buffer” zone between Western Europe and Russia • Roosevelt wanted self-determination for countries in Eastern Europe - free elections and choice of government • At Yalta - USA pushed for the creation of aUnited Nations • Germany’s future at Yalta was planned • Germany would be divided into 4 zones, occupied by the militaries of USA, Great Britain, France, and the USSR

7. Aftermath of WWII • World has 2 superpowers • United States • USSR • Germany has been divided into 4 parts at the Yalta Conference (and so has Berlin)

8. United Nations • The UN, created at Yalta, was a newpeacekeeping organization. • Congress this time supports U.S. involvement • Goal: Try to stop wars from starting: collective measure to end warfare

9. Soviet Bloc/Iron Curtain • Stalin secures Communist governments in Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Poland and Yugoslavia (breaks Yalta pact) • “….communism and capitalism cannot exist in the same world…” – Josef Stalin

11. Iron Curtain • “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe….All these famous cities and the populations around them lie in the Soviet sphere and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence, but to a very high and increasing measure of control from Moscow. -Winston Churchill, “Iron Curtain” speech, March 5, 1946

14. Containment Policy • Prevent the spread of Communism • Raise support for U.S. and democracy • Prevents Domino Effect • Once communism spread it could not be stopped • Question: Why is communism such an enemy to the American way of life? Think of some of the principles.

15. Truman Doctrine (1947) • Great Britain could no longer support Greece and Turkey • Truman pledges aid to Turkey and Greece (and any country that is threatened by Communist expansion). • Send money • No troops. Why?

16. Marshall Plan (1948) • Pledged money to help Europe rebuild ($12.5 billion!) • Set up economic ties with Europe/U.S. • Again, tried to improve democratic influence in Europe • Questions: Why does the U.S. care if Europe is rebuilt? What does the Soviet Union think about the Marshall Plan?
