  3. Dramatist • Besides Shakespeare, Marlowe is the foremost dramatist of the Renaissance • His Play Tamburlaine, about a fictional king, was EXTREAMLY successful • Most of his plays involve a hero who overreaches his limits and falls tragically, such as Dr. Faustus

  4. School • Went to school to become a minister, but never took his holy orders • Almost denied his masters degree, because the school thought he was going to use it to help Catholics overseas. • Received a letter from the Privvy Council, saying that Marlow had done the queen “good service”

  5. Letter • “It is not her Majesty’s pleasure that anyone employed as he had been in matters touching the benefit of his country should be defamed by those that are ignorant in the affairs he went about”

  6. Only lived six years after writing Tamburlaine • Involved in a brawl where another poet killed the man Marlowe was fighting

  7. I didn’t do it!!!! • Released from jail per Self-defense • Later accused by a friend, Thomas Kyd,(under torture) of being an atheist • Later accused of Atheism, sedition, and homosexuality by Richard Baines • Four days later Marlowe was killed over the bill at a bar in a suburb of London

  8. “Modern scholars have discovered that the murderer and the others present in the room at the inn had connections to the world of spies, double agents and swindlers to which Marlowe himself was in some way linked. Those who were arrested in connection with the murder were briefly held and then quietly released”
