Organizing committee: Osvaldo Civitarese (University of La Plata) Serge Jullian (Laboratoire de l`Accelerateur Lineaire) Jouni Suhonen (University of Jyväskylä) Ivan Štekl (Czech Technical University in Prague) History of MEDEX workshop: MEDEX´97 (CTU Prague, May 27-31, 1997), MEDEX´99 (CTU Prague, July 20-23, 1999), MEDEX´01 (CTU Prague, July 11-15, 2001), MEDEX´03 (CTU Prague, July 7-10, 2003). The aim of the MEDEX workshop: On the initiative of the scientific committee the first MEDEX workshop (MEDEX'97) in late May 1997 was organized to discuss methods of calculation of nuclear matrix elements in connection with the nuclear double beta decay. In the later MEDEX workshops we have extended the discussions to other rare weak-interaction processes where nuclear matrix elements are needed as essential part of the problem. In the year 2003 also the dark matter aspects where nuclear matrix elements are needed as input were embraced. The final aim of a coherent effort of the nuclear-structure community should be to produce reliable estimates of the values of the involved nuclear matrix elements and to estimate the magnitude of their error. The following boundary conditions have been agreed upon, namely: • to have a limited number of topics and participants (max. 30, MEDEX`05 - 50), • to facilitate a free discussion on recently proposed theoretical models and experimental results, • to put the emphasis on the physics of the models, • to draw specific conclusions for the experimentalists working in the fields of interest as well as to have direct contact of theoreticians with running experiments. 15.4.2005 I.Štekl, IDEA meeting, Orsay
Project MEDEX-ILIAS The aim of the project (ILIAS-MEDEX): The aim of the project is to connect MEDEX (Workshop on calculation of double-beta-decay matrix elements – original name of workshop; Nuclear matrix elements for neutrino physics and dark matter – current name of workshop) conference with the ILIAS project as a platform of interaction between ILIAS (double beta decay, dark matter, nuclear matrix elements calculations) and leading scientists outside ILIAS (e.g. the USA, Japan, South-America). Project is concentrated effort of many institutions into the astroparticle science in Europe. It concerns several regions of R&D and coordinates astroparticle physics community in Europe (deep underground science laboratories, dark matter detection, double beta decay, gravitational waves, theoretical astroparticle physics, low-background techniques, thermal noise reduction in GW detectors as well as transnational access). 15.4.2005 I.Štekl, IDEA meeting, Orsay
Expected contributions of the project: • to have direct connections between theoreticians and experimentalists in the frame of ILIAS project (ILIAS activities – N3 = direct DM detection; N4 = search on bb decay; J2 = integrated bb decay; TA = transnational access), • to connect the efforts of world-leading theoreticians and experimentalists and those of ILIAS. This potentially fruitful interaction could boost scientific fields where nuclear matrix elements play important role, like double-beta-decay, dark matter, exotic electroweak processes. • to develop related models (RPA, nuclear shell models). 15.4.2005 I.Štekl, IDEA meeting, Orsay
Financial costs and procedure of using financial support: • Based on the subject of MEDEX workshop and subjects of some specific parts of ILIAS project we suggest to cover travel and local expenses for about 4 participants per following activities: N3 = direct DM detection N4 = search of bb decay J2 = integral bb decay TA = transnational access Theory ??? • Participants will be selected together by relevant activity coordinators and organizing committee. Talks given by selected participants should be dedicated to ILIAS activities and correspond to the subject of MEDEX meeting. • Written contributions will appear in the MEDEX proceeding printed as a common activity with ILIAS (cover the expenditures of the MEDEX proceeding ???). 15.4.2005 I.Štekl, IDEA meeting, Orsay
